Sólheimasandur : The Plane Crash
After driving for about 2 hours down the coast of Iceland, we arrived at the Solheimasandur, the black beach. I asked another tourist where the plane crash was and he pointed off into the distance. Having done little research on the site, I was unaware that the plane was a 45 minute walk away.
There was a steady flow of tourists coming from the opposite direction so I knew I was going the right direction. Finally, the plane began to come into view. It seemed small at first, but as I got closer I was taken aback by what I saw; a real plane crash.
The plane wrecked in 1973 when a US Navy plane ran out of fuel. Miraculously, everyone on board survived!
If you dare, you can climb inside, on the wings, and atop the fuselage of the aircraft. It makes for some pretty cool photos.
